Majority of US consumers will be able to access 5G by end of 2020? The current U.S. coverage report

With the increase in the number of 5G-compatible smartphones along with the expansion of 5G coverage, it is expected that a majority of consumers will be able to access 5G services by the end of 2020.

Currently, 5G service is offered by Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T. Even though these telecom giants started offering 5G service in late 2019, consumers were urged to hold-off their plans to buy a 5G phone because the service is still relatively spotty. Instead, users can add 5G service to your plan and wait until the service is perfected, which will be improved and functional by the end of 2020, according to experts.

Verizon in 13 cities

Previously, Verizon was offering 5G service in ten cities, including Atlanta, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Washington. In September 2019, Verizon expanded its 5G service to cover New York City, Panama City, and Boise, increasing the number of cities under their 5G network coverage to 13. The expansion of Verizon’s 5G service is abundantly evident in New York, where several boroughs are already covered by the network. On September 26, 2019, Verizon’s customers living in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn could access 5G with some users reporting download speeds of up to 1.2Gbps. In Manhattan, consumers can use Verizon’s 5G service in Washington Heights, Midtown, Financial District, Harlem, and Hell’s Kitchen.

In Panama City, users can access Verizon’s 5G service in the downtown area, Forest Park, and Lower Grand Lagoon. On the other hand, users in Boise can use Verizon’s service in Downtown Boise, West End, Meridian, Town Square, Idaho State Capitol, Fort Boise Park, and Capital City Event Center. In Brooklyn, users will be able to find 5G service in Downtown Brooklyn, while those living in the Bronx can access Verizon’s service in Pelham Bay, Fordham Heights, and Hunt’s Point.

It is important to note that even though only a few boroughs are covered by Verizon’s 5G network, users in other parts of the cities covered can access the service by visiting popular city landmarks and tourist attractions. The strategy of offering 5G around popular destinations allows Verizon to showcase its service to a wider segment of potential customers. For example, the company offers 5G in Madison Square Garden, allowing a large number of visitors to experience the immense capabilities of Verizon’s 5G network.

Sprint in 9 cities, T Mobile in 6

Currently, Sprint offers 5G service in nine cities, and T-Mobile’s 5G network is available in six cities. In terms of the number of cities covered, AT&T is in the lead with a total of 21 cities, but it is only available to business users and restricts the public from accessing its services.

Attaining extensive 5G coverage requires concerted efforts, not just the expansion of coverage by the carriers. Several manufacturers are offering 5G-compatible smartphones to consumers in the US market. For example, Samsung recently released Galaxy Note 10+ 5G and Galaxy S10 5G. Using these devices, consumers can access 5G service by adding it to their Verizon plan. Apple also announced that it would be launching 5G-compatible iPhone in September 2020.
